What is Grout?

Grout is a relatively unstable substance that becomes solid and stable when mixed with water. It is important to hold tiles in place. The primary ingredient in most types of grout and grout epoxy is called Portland cement. Mixing it with latex or other chemicals to make the grout set up faster and more resistant to water.

It becomes strong and stable as it binds to water molecules and starts to set up. If there is too much water, it will not cure properly, and the grout will be really weak. Also if there is too little water, it will crack easily. If you are grouting bathroom tile, you will want to have a smooth, batter-like consistency. If you are learning how to grout floors with thicker grout lines, you will want to have a mixture that is more sandy, kind of like wet cement. (Read and learn our 8 Tips For Grouting Tile.)

how to install grout

Before you grout your tile floor, you should have all of your tiles in place with the tile spacers, before you begin to fill in the grout lines. When you create your grout paste, it should start as a fine powder with no lumps or chucks in it. If there are lumps in the grout powder, this probably means  there was exposure to water or moisture from the air. This type of mixture will not hold your tiles together very well, so it is always best to start with a good mixture. Mix it up in a separate container and then if you accidentally add too much water, you can add more grout powder to it later. The mixture should have a thick batter-like consistency. If you are only grouting small tiles, you can probably do it with a small spackle blade or a putty knife. If you are grouting large tiles, or a larger area, you will want to use a float to help you spread the grout quickly and fill in all the tiles.

As you spread the grout paste on the tile, be sure to scrape off all the excess paste in a diagonal direction, so that you are not pulling grout paste out from the tiles. Make sure that you push the grout into the grooves as much as possible. Be careful not to mix up more grout than you can use in the next 20 minutes. After about 20 minutes it will start to dry out, and you will need to mix up some more.

Applying Grout To Your Tiles

When applying the grout mixture, you want to start in the corner or in the far edge, and then work your way back to the door. After about 20 minutes, you want to get a large sponge. Make sure to ring the water out of it before you use it. A damp sponge works, but not too wet. Most of the time, you can do a better job with tile grout if you work quickly. It is also important not to do a sloppy job. Take time to stop and clean up the tile every 20 minutes so that it can look its best. Be careful not to walk on the tile until it cures. Use the sponge to remove the excess grout paste from the tile surface and cleaning the tile off so that it looks nice. When you are done wiping the tile, it should look like you have finished installing your brand-new tile. The actual color of the grout may become lighter as it sets up and have some time to dry.

It takes up to 48 hours to cure the grout. You should not get it wet, or walk on the tile before the 48 hour time frame. Also, it is a good idea to apply two or three coats of a grout sealant on top of the grout surface. This will be good because it will help keep the grout cleaner longer, and it will protect the new grout that you have installed for a few years.
