The white paste that holds the tiles together is what becomes know as the grout. Since it is a lot like cement it is porous and attracts dirt and grime very easily. For this reason, gout can also become a breeding ground for lots of different types of bacteria, mold and mildew.
So how do you keep your grouts from incubating bacteria and getting dirty easily? The answer is simple. You should get it done either professional or learn how to do it yourself. Putting on a sealer on will make cleaning your tiles much easier and make you home a lot more sanitary.

First you rinse the tile with a vinegar and water mixture. In some cases this may be enough, for most readers, read on. Next you make a paste out of equal amounts of salt and baking soda with a little bit of water. This is the grout cleaning mix. Using a soft scrubber or a toothbrush scrub grout until it becomes clean, Rinse with water or a wet sponge and then dry thoroughly with a towel.
If tile is stained you can use lemon juice or bleach to restore the white grout color. Be patient, let it soak in for 10 to 15 minutes , then wipe off. Be careful to properly dilute the bleach and never mix the bleach with any other chemicals. Wear gloves and glasses if they are available.
You can also clean grout using a pressure washer or a steam cleaner. Generally you use a steam cleaner inside and pressure washer outdoors. Both of these tools are very effective at cleaning tile and brick grout.

A good thing about colored grout is that you can add contrast to other tile colors. But, using a dark colored grout can very easily hide mold and mildew growth. The same care written here should be applied to darker grout colors.

Ed, you are right. Dark tile and grout is an excellent way to hide mold and mildew. It also make the up keep a lot more hassle free.
Ed I have a question for you, how do you feel about using vinegar for regular tile grout maintenance. I have read some mixed reviews on how it can damage grout. What do you think about this.
Also is their any time you would not recommend a grout sealer?
