What is the Safest, Non-Toxic Way to Clean Grout and Tile?

One of the most important things to consider when you clean your tile grout, is make sure that you are using a cleaner that is safe to use around children and pets. My youngest child is almost 15 months old. She gets into everything. I take extra care to lock cabinets that contain anything dangerous. She is at the stage in her life where she has to try everything herself. Even if her parents tell her no, she will still get into things when we are not looking.

If you have children, or even pets who act a lot like my little girl, you’ll want to try to clean things easily, and without the danger of exposing your kids and pets to harsh cleaning chemicals. One of the best ways to clean tile and grout, is with a safe, non-toxic cleaner. In this article I’ll show you exactly how to do it.

organic grout cleaningFirst thing you want to do is you want to get the right materials. To clean grout naturally, you should use vinegar and baking soda. Growing up, this is one of my first science experiments. I remember making a volcano, and using baking soda and eager to get it to overflow. Fortunately, the mixture of baking soda and vinegar also does a good job for helping to remove grout stains. The vinegar helps to disinfect. The baking soda helps remove the stains. When you use both of them together, you have a powerful, non-toxic cleaner. This cleaner is also pretty cheap.

To make this cleaner, mix about 2 cups of vinegar with half a cup of baking soda. It is best to mix these in a plastic bucket. The solution may become warm when you use it. It will also smell like vinegar. It is a good idea to wear gloves while you are scrubbing the tile and grout. Then take a brush, and rub it on your tile grout lines. For best results, you want to allow it to dry. And then come back and scrub it one more time. In most cases, this will get rid of the grout stain and help your bathroom to look  new and clean once again.
